Frequently Asked Questions
Where did I get bed bugs?
Almost every homeowner that gets bed bugs asks that question. The answer is usually a detective game to figure things out, working backwards. Sometimes, depending on the degree of infestation, you can reverse math the development of the current population to when the first adults may have been introduced into the environment.
If you calculate the hatching cycle to be 6-8 weeks, and you have a light infestation, you can start thinking of your life the previous 6-8 weeks. Have you had visitors? Did you spend the night anywhere? Any family members? Have you traveled? Have you stayed at a hotel lately? By using this reverse math method, you can narrow down to a few ideas of where or from whom you may have had exposure.
Why is it so expensive to treat for bed bugs?
First, there are two ways to treat that are most widely practiced. One method uses heat and the other is considered “conventional” or “traditional”.
When using heat, the price can fluctuate based on the cost of propane. Also, since you have to heat a home for several hours and most good heaters run on propane, then that alone drives up the cost of a job.
Taking heat out of the equation, the following needs to occur:
1. Inspection
2. Explanation of treatment and importance of proper preparation work
3. Treatment
4. Follow up inspection
5. Possible 2nd follow up inspection.
You will need someone travel to your home for all, and they need to be compensated. It is not unusual for a technician to invest 5 to 8 hours on your bed bug work.
The pesticides used for bed bug extermination are relatively low-priced and not a big factor in pricing of a bed bug job. The day to day cost of doing business is usually a bigger part of that overall bill, whether it’s withholding tax, insurance, building upkeep and rent. All of these factors drive up the cost of doing the job.
Bed Bugs ‘n More has lower overhead costs, so we are able to offer these services more affordably than larger pest control companies.
Can I just do it myself?
The simple answer is yes. The more common answer I give is this. You can also buy a scalpel, but can you take out your own kid’s tonsils? Again the answer is yes, but even with a YouTube video helping you, I would not suggest doing your own surgery.
Something you are paying for is, in my case, over 35 years of bed bug inspecting and servicing experience. I know most of the issues that will be encountered on any given bed bug job and how to work through those issues. That experience is not available on the back of a can of over-the-counter spray.
I have found that in most DIY cases, the customer reads the instructions somewhat, and sort of follows them. Too many times I have had customers that said they did “X” with the spray. I ask them where it says to do that on the label and they cannot show me. In Missouri, the adage “the label is the law” holds true on pest control products, whether they are professional products or something you bought over the counter.
What is the difference between heat and “conventional” treatment?
Two words separate these very different methods of eliminating bed bugs. Those two words are price and preparation.
The cost of heat work and the preparation for heat work are the two biggest differences between the two methods.
The heaters are expensive (if the company is using good heaters). Like everything else mechanical, they wear down and break and have to be replaced and repaired. You don’t want to be halfway through a job and have one of your heaters blow out on you, so, as an owner, you have to be prepared for such an emergency. On top of that, propane is expensive, and with rising fuel costs, it will not get cheaper any time soon.
Then the preparation for heat work is extremely elaborate and detailed. Photos, cd’s, movies and anything else that could melt on the dashboard of your car on a hot summer day all have to be removed and placed in a separate container.
If you don’t follow those types of instruction, the company may void out any kind of warranty. Worse, by not following the intricate preparation work needed for heat, you risk not getting optimum control and thus end up with a reinfestation, usual past the warranty period offered. So, all the money you paid for the first treatment gets charged again to do it all over again.
Many times in heat jobs I would suggest to customers that if there isn’t time to do it right, how will there be time to do it over?
